Elmyr de Hory’s immense artistic talent brought every one of his many canvases and sketches to life. The only trouble was, the paintings he created were fakes - skilled impersonations of Matisse, Picasso, Modigliani and other great artists that fooled many of the world’s most respected art experts.
Elmyr led this life of “art crime” in order to survive and work as a painter, and he became one of the art world’s most prolific and notorious forgers, with his works finding their way into major galleries and prestigious museum and private collections.
As he achieved fame and a certain amount of fortune, he also found himself surrounded by real criminals who exploited and exposed him, and he was sought by the authorities in various parts of the world. His story is about art, talent, personal struggle, the 60’s and 70’s jet set, money, sex -- and a pattern of crime that still reverberates through the art world today.
Big Fresh Pictures has been granted the exclusive rights to Elmyr's story, as well as access to his letters, artwork and personal effects, from Mark Forgy, the executor of Elmyr’s estate. Mark is completing his memoirs, based on the eight years that he lived with Elmyr -- and the details of his story form the foundation of this exciting and alluring film project.
